Ruth Roman (n e Gold) was born in Lynn located in Massachusetts. She was the daughter of Lithuanian Jewish immigrants Mary Pauline and Abraham Roman. Her father, who was a carnival barker, was killed as a young girl, requiring her mother to provide for her family through work as an attendant and a cleaner. Ruth was a student and grew up in poverty within Boston Massachusetts' tenement districts. She quit school in just two years, to go into acting. Her path to success turned out be fraught with difficulties and In New York, she obtained an opportunity to pose for stills for a crime magazine, but theatrical work eluded her. The following job she got was an "hat check" woman at a nightclub before she gave up and relocated to Boston. It was the New England Repertory Company was the first job she had as a regular actor. The company paid her doing shifts during the day, in the ushering department. She earned a bachelor's diploma in drama from Bishop-Lee Theatre School.
